Saying Goodbye to The Cuckoo’s Nest

There really isn’t another shop in Dunedin quite like The Cuckoo’s Nest.  A shop that felt like it was born on Cuba St in Wellington but decided to venture down south. In true Wellington style it showcases an array of local designers, crafters and jewellers including the talented owners, Susan and Annika who are behind many of the brands in store.

Sadly this shop that is such a great asset to Dunedin is closing down in just 4 days time! Why you may ask? We’ll for many reasons really.  I’ve seen many small boutiques in NZ struggle with high shop rent, facing competition with large overseas chain stores, not enough profit for big advertising campaigns to reach the people who would appreciate and love the store. If this doesn’t sound fair to you,  then you can help future small businesses by using your consumer powers! It’s really easy you just vote with your dollar by spending at shop’s you would like to see stay.

I’ve loved working at The Cuckoo’s Nest as it inspires us to get creative. The art of up-cycling has been a winner with examples from Melanie Child, local designer constructing patchwork jeans from various other pairs of jeans (and new in store this month).  Velo  has beautifully hand cut jewellery from bike inner tyre tubes. Dot Stitch with her glamorous rage of stunning rings and bracelets made from vintage earrings. Senorita AweSUMO designs one off pieces of clothing from pre-loved fabrics, garments and off cuts.  Craftworks Cambodia re-uses old bullet and bomb materials to turn into symbols of peace, with gold ‘Tree of Life’ necklaces, earrings and rings. And that’s just to name a few!
